Shewhart

Overview

Shewhart is an online platform designed and developed by my colleague Jhosua Pachon and me for our final degree project. The goal of the application was to help in the elaboration of virtual laboratories for the Statistics Quality Control course of the industrial engineering program at the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente.

Details

The main goal of the web application was to provide a teaching support tool for the teachers of the Statistics Quality Control course and a learning resource for their students.

We conducted interviews and questionaries with the teachers and students in order to identify their needs, and based on the results, define the functional and non-functional requirements for the app.

We found the app would spin around the course material through the inspection of products represented by 3D models and the appliance of the techniques learned in class. It was important to let the teacher set up the virtual laboratory through forms, where they can organize groups and specify the product and variables for that group. At the same time, the students could read the instructions and gather the product information by viewing the 3D models to finally apply the requested techniques.

Once we defined the requirements for both end users, it was time to create the first designs and prototypes using Figma. After those were complete, the first testing round started by applying questionaries and thinking-aloud methods.

With the first testing round completed, we made several changes to the design, like the addition of extra fields for the teacher's form and the exclusion of a secondary device for the students, and then proceeded to the second testing round.

The second testing round showed a very important improvement in the app design and overall experience, of course, some changes were made based on the results before continuing with the implementation.

With the app development complete, we entered the third and final testing round, where we performed again the thinking-aloud method along with a new questionnaire to find the level of usability of the app.

Finally, we delivered the app to the teachers so they could use it in the following term.
